About

What we're building on

Earlier in the year we gathered at Treo House to explore the complex relationship between climate change and capitalism. We asked ourselves whether climate mitigation was possible within a capitalistic system, which led us to question whether the opportunities and problems that capitalism is creating are:

Inherent to a capitalistic system.

OR

Symptomatic of how capitalism is being allowed to run.

Amongst the group we found strong cases across a range of perspectives, which encouraged us to dig deeper into both possibilities.

Now we are asking, if our current economic system was inherently problematic...

Is a New Economy even possible?

Ben Kellard thinks so.

Ben argues that if markets get to decide whose needs get met and how, and wellbeing is measured by money, the economic system is designed for extraction, inequality and insecurity.

He's been working to consolidate theories from around the world of what an alternative wellbeing-centred economy might look like, and he has ideas on how we could get there.

Join us to hear what he's learning, and to collectively explore what we all think and feel about a new economy. All perspectives are welcome, this discussion will be centred in curiosity and respect.

About Ben Kellard

Ben is a fellow at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. He is currently working independently with global thought leaders and representatives of business, finance and government to co-create an overarching narrative for a new economy. This is intended to help leaders and citizens to see the urgent need to transform the economy and find their place in it.
