About
The relationship between climate change and capitalism is complex.
For us to effectively respond to the climate crisis and other sustainability challenges, actively acknowledging and understanding this relationship feels important.
In May we held a session to start to do this. We explored whether the opportunities and problems that capitalism is creating are;
Inherent to a capitalistic system.
OR
Symptomatic of how capitalism is being allowed to run.
Let's just say it's not straightforward.
We did identify that...
1) Given the time-bound threat of climate change and other urgent tipping points, we could work on strengthening the guardrails on capitalism.
And that...
2) Given capitalism's inherent focus on financial growth and privatisation, we could work on evolving towards a system with different core goals.
Of course neither of these are small ambitions. But by putting one foot in front of the other we can make progress.
This session is focussed on strengthening the guardrails on capitalism.
We'll be exploring what guardrails are already in place, what guardrails we think are missing and why we think they're missing. In a subsequent event we will explore how we can contribute to implementing them.
What to expect
This is a facilitated interactive workshop enabling us to lean into the tricky questions, learn from each other and collectively make progress on a complex and important topic.
No individual holds all of the answers to our sustainability problems. Regardless of your background, your presence, questions and ideas are invited and valued.
Light nibbles of focaccia, humus and crudités included.
Facilitated by Gemma Lannon.
